As humans, we are wired to want social connection. Our brains are structured in such a way that if we do not get social connections, we feel lonely, and this has negative consequences for our health.
Social connection promotes happiness, longevity, and overall health. Feelings of social isolation are becoming more common as time goes on.
Research from the Centre for Disease Prevention shows that 1 in 3 adults aged 45 to 65 feel lonely. Those who are in the 65-year-old age bracket don’t fare much better. Around 1 in 4 adults in this age group experience feelings of loneliness from time to time.
We experience health consequences due to loneliness. These consequences include an increased risk of premature death, and an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and dementia.
Due to these consequences, making friends and connecting with others is important for the promotion of good health. While making friends may seem easy to some, it can be a daunting task for others.
Throughout our adult lives, we experience many milestones that may promote change. These include: graduating high school, going to college or university, getting married, having kids, and retiring.
Each of these stages promotes changes that can be embraced to meet new friends. One of the factors that may hinder people from making friends is a reluctance to embrace this change. Oftentimes, individuals are scared of change because it promotes the uncomfortable, and they don’t want to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
Embracing change is important for making new friends. This blog explores the benefits of change in making and creating lasting friendships.
What Are the Benefits of Embracing Change?
Embracing change has numerous benefits, including:
Opening Your Mind to New Experiences
When we embrace change, we allow ourselves to do things that we normally would not do. This allows us to experience new vacations and places that we have never explored before.
By embracing change, we explore new environments that open us up to friendships. Think of that dog park where you can meet a new friend who loves animals like you, or that vacation to France where you can meet other individuals who love to travel.
Whether you join a new club, talk to a current friend or go to an event, friendships can occur.
Reduces Feelings of Social Anxiety and Builds Up Confidence
If you are one of those individuals who struggles with low self-esteem or has trouble in social interactions, getting out can reduce these feelings by building up your confidence for being put in new situations.
These experiences will push you outside of your comfort zone and empower you to confront your insecurities in social settings. By embracing the change that comes with getting out of our comfort zone, we open ourselves up to meeting other potential friends doing the same.
Provides a fresh perspective
When we see the same things day in and day out, we can become accustomed to the same old, same old.
We are not seeing anyone new, and therefore we are not opening ourselves up to the possibility of meeting people who can become friends.
When we embrace change, we open ourselves up to meeting people with other worldviews and from other cultures.
We create a new outlook or perspective, with a lot more variety and a much greater chance of meeting friends.
Embracing Change and Finding Friends
Embracing this change will be an important part of adulthood. It will occur during every milestone of your life.
If you don’t embrace change, you not only increase your risk of health consequences like anxiety, depression, dementia, and obesity, but you also reduce your chance of growth and the possibility of making new friends and experiencing everything the world has to offer.
Through embracing change, you are allowing yourself to create a new perspective, reduce your feelings of social anxiety, improve your confidence, and open yourself up to new experiences.
Any fears or anxiety you have around change are important to manage and address to be able to fully embrace the benefits it has to offer and form new, meaningful, and lasting friendships.
