Have you ever felt lonely in your life and needed someone to talk to? You’re not alone! A Statistics Canada survey showed that approximately 40% of us feel lonely from time to time. This feeling of loneliness can occur for several reasons, but the most common of them is the innate need for all of us to connect. As humans, we are social creatures. Perhaps not surprisingly, when we lack that connection, we start feeling lonely.

Let’s face it, we all crave deep and meaningful connections, whether we would like to admit it or not. We can achieve this connection through a friendly conversation. Friendly conversations are beneficial to us for many reasons.

Friendly conversations help us form friendships, and they can also help us strengthen our existing bonds. Even better, they help to improve our health while doing so. Research has shown that in conversations where we feel “good” (understood, connected, and bonded), we release chemicals in our brain that trigger our brain to signal to us that we want more of this situation.

So, it is no wonder we all seek out friendly conversations, given our brain signals in these situations when they are good. Read on to learn additional benefits of friendly conversations and what the Friendly Company is about.

What are the Benefits of a Friendly Conversation?

Friendly conversations mean different things to different people. For some, these connections need to be made in person, but for others, these connections are better made remotely (over the phone or via one of the many video chat platforms that exist for us to use, or Skype).

These phone conversations can produce many benefits, both for our personal goals and for our physical and mental well-being. Phone calls can be scary but necessary to reduce the feelings of loneliness that can cause a whole host of other issues (an increased risk of depression, diabetes, and dementia, among other things).

On the flip side of these issues, there are also benefits to these phone conversations, which include:

Creating meaningful bonds and connections with others

When we engage in meaningful conversations with others, we strengthen our bonds by learning more about their lives.

Combating loneliness and isolation

A lack of interaction can cause a person to feel lonely because their brain is not giving you the signals you need to signal connection.

When you interact through short, friendly phone conversations, you are giving your body what it needs to signal your brain to release the connection chemicals, reducing your feelings of loneliness by reducing the shortage of connection chemicals you once had before the connection.

Improved mental health

These conversations help to combat depression and anxiety in the same way they do loneliness and isolation.

We produce chemicals such as dopamine when interacting, which is the same brain chemical that is low when we feel depressed.

By increasing our dopamine levels, we reduce our risk of depression.

Improved communication skills

Conversations with others can be a great time to practice our communication skills. They can also be a way to practice if you are learning a new language.

Having a short conversation with someone who is a native speaker of the language you wish to learn can help you learn new words you didn’t know already and help you hone in on the ones you did know.

What is the Goal of the Friendly Company and What Are Our Chats About?

The friendly company wants to reduce loneliness in our community

and improve feelings of connection through the creation of a community hub.

This community hub of ours seeks to bring people together and create connections through friendly conversations, meet-ups, and bonding. We create bonding through game nights as well.

We also aim to host gift businesses on our platform that can promote themselves to our community members. These gifts will be used by our community to send gifts to the people they consider their friends. Find out more about our friendly call program here.
