Sunshine & Smiles

Stephanie H.

I grew up in Vaughan, Thornhill to be specific. I had great friends growing up but was often envious of the popular crowd, never quite fitting in there. Case and point, I had the same childhood crush for 10 years. That never panned out, had a few minor relationships, but I met my (now) husband when I was 18 years old and can’t picture my life without him. I call him the summer fling that never ended! My childhood consisted of a lot of pets. Everything from a lizard to a rat, my younger brother ;) and cats & dogs in between. I became allergic to cats and dogs at about 12 years old but couldn’t part with them. So I had pets until about 2 years ago, but then my kids wore me down and I agreed to hamsters. They are named Chip & Potato.

My parents who are still married and always worked together as entrepreneurs were strong role models for me. When I graduated from the University of Waterloo, I worked for them in large Trade Show and Conference event planning. I went from there to starting my own company doing publicity, which I learned I did not like (although I was very good at) because I get nervous cold calling for sales purposes. I learned I am less anxious doing operational, customer service-style activities than trying to meet other people’s sales goals.

The excitement I get from being onsite at large scale events always gives me a great rush. I still get equal joy out of my last two smaller planned events… a Hamster’s 1st Birthday Party and my daughter’s Harry Potter themed 9th birthday :)

o I have a passion for food. I will try anything and some of the weirdest things I’ve tried are alligator in Toronto, cicadas (beetles) in Beijing and goat + rabbit stew in Greece.
o In case you couldn’t tell from the food, I also love to travel, and I want to do more now that my kids are getting older.
o Living in Costa Rica has changed my outlook on consumerism and my husband pushes me to be a minimalist, daily. I still find it hard not to buy things. I love all the things :)
o I’m part of two book clubs. One from Toronto that I joined 15 years ago and lately participate with them over Zoom and the other I host in Tamarindo at my condo building’s pool.
o Have you ever heard of Pickleball? I started playing it and I love it.
o I once started a cookie catering company and became a guest chef on Rogers Toronto Daytime for about 2 years.
o I’m a people pleaser and sometimes this can both add to and derail from my success.
o I thrive on humour (you can never have too many memes), and I really try to see the positive in anything. My grade 12 math teacher once said “Life is too serious, to be taken seriously.” I'll never forget him!

A little about me...

What I've been up to lately...

I got married in 2007 and have two phenomenal children born in 2011 and 2015. I’ve lived in Costa Rica the last few years. It was a long well-thought out plan and decision to move here and one of the best things I’ve ever done. I have a lifeguarding and swim teacher background, so to fill my days, I started teaching AquaFit classes at my condo’s pool. Great for some pocket money or a side hustle as it’s called nowadays! And I manage an AirBnB I own where I’m living in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. I also dabble in journalism and love writing. This gives me lots of time to spend with my kids and join in on their school activities and after-school extracurriculars.

I have moved about the last 5-7 years and strangely enough, Covid-19 gave me stability I didn’t know I was lacking because I couldn’t travel easily. I took up some self-care I neglected over the last decade by trying to work my way up to a 5km run in just over 30 minutes. I’m at 4.5km in 30 mins now… getting so close! Based on my past history of working out (basically non-existent) I was afraid I would scare myself off so I’ve been working my way to 5km over a period of 8 months. They say slow and steady wins the race, right? I always laugh at myself when I say “They”. Really, who are these people?
